Saturation Marking
KEEP IT VISIBLE, KEEP IT EASY, KEEP IT SAFE

In 1995, Selectamark property marking kits were supplied for a saturation-marking scheme initiated by Darlington Police. The outstanding crime reduction statistics which resulted from this encouraged Darlington to expand on the initial project whilst two other police forces - Lancashire and Humberside - decided to start their own schemes.

Since that time the success of saturation-marking has continued to grow. Selectamark has now been used in over 90 separate large-scale property-marking schemes throughout the United Kingdom, from Bristol in the SouthWest to Tayside in Scotland. At present the largest of these schemes has taken place in Bradford, followed by Sunderland, where property marking has been carried out in some 18,000 domestic properties.

It is undoubted that permanent visible etching is the preferred form of marking as valuable items can be easily and immediately identified by police officers, without the use of any scanning or U.V. lamp equipment. Additionally, the potential thieves are learning that Selectamark cannot be removed, therefore drastically reducing the value of the property and making it almost impossible to sell.

There is certainly evidence of a great reduction in attempted burglary and theft within areas which have been saturated with visible marking. Various police force crime reduction statistics reflect this as being anywhere between 21% and 98%. Obviously, in many instances the property marking forms just one part of a larger initiative involving other security measures, i.e. installation of door locks, improved street lighting.

As far as is possible, we have tried to monitor the success of these schemes both immediately after they have been carried out and at a later date once the heavy policing of the area and the ‘novelty’ factor have worn off. The results continue to be encouraging.
